Meal Prep Sesame Noodle Bowls! Fork-twirly noodles, an easy creamy sesame sauce, perfect browned chicken, and all the veg. YUM.

Sometimes you just need to really look forward to your lunch, and sometimes = always.

Will you look forward to:

  • silky smooth, lusciously creamy sesame sauce that you can just shake up in a jar real quick
  • fork-twirly noodles with just the right amount of stick to hang onto that sauce
  • salted edamame
  • crispy cucumber bits
  • juicy browned chicken or tofu or whatever protein you love – like, I don’t know, I’m having visions of a soft boiled egg?

YOU TELL ME.

Easy Is What We’re Working with Today

This recipe is incredibly easy, which, as you know, is kind of the only way I do meal prep. E-A-S-Y.

The sauce can shake up in a jar and the noodles can cook in 2 minutes (serious).

And just like that, you have sesame noodles.

And said sesame noodles are, in fact, the base of the sesame noodle bowls, so basically you’re done. Now it’s just up to you how extra you want to get with your bowl-ing.

Ingredients for sesame noodle bowls.

I went medium effort on my sesame noodle bowls with cucumbers, edamame, sesame-ish chicken, and a sprinkling of sesame seeds, and it was part noodles, part salad, part health bomb, and I loved it.

You can debate me on hot vs. cold all day – I will let you win either way because both are amazing.

Guys, this is a desk lunch to keep you counting the hours till lunch BUT NOT LIKE I DO THAT?! Happy prepped lunches to you!

Sesame Noodle Bowls: FAQs

Is this recipe heavier on the sauce or on the noodles?

Kinda however you want it. If you love sauce like me, make a 1.5x batch. Especially if you are going to use some on the chicken. Or want some leftover in your fridge or freezer.

What kind of noodles did you use?

The noodles I used said “Oriental Style Noodles – Product of Japan” on the package, but a lot of the videos I watched for sesame noodles recommended Chinese egg noodles. Whatever noodles you use, I’d recommend cooking for slightly less than what is directed on the package.

I have dark soy sauce. Will that work?

A lot of recipes I saw called for dark soy sauce! I liked using dark soy sauce and probably would do that again, but I also found that the sauce still tasted really good with regular or low sodium soy sauce. In my opinion, either one can work.

Do I eat these noodle bowls hot or cold?

Either! If you do want to eat these sesame noodles hot, I would recommend storing the cucumber separately and adding it after you heat it up.

What other veggies or proteins would work in these bowls?

Cucumbers are traditional with sesame noodles, but I think just about any vegetables (and/or protein) would be great. Carrots. Bell peppers. Broccoli. Green onions. Shrimp. Salmon. Tofu. Tempeh. Peanuts.

Description

Meal Prep Sesame Noodle Bowls! Fork-twirly noodles, an easy creamy sesame sauce, perfect browned chicken, and all the veg. YUM.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Sesame Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup sesame paste (or tahini)
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • Sriracha and sugar to taste

Bowls:

  • 68 ounces stir fry noodles, Chinese egg noodles, or linguine in a pinch
  • 2 cups edamame, cooked
  • 2 cucumbers, diced
  • 1 lb. chicken breast, cooked and diced (optional: see notes)
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Sauce: Whisk all sauce ingredients together until smooth (or you can run it through the food processor, or shake it up in a jar).
  2. Noodles: Cook noodles a few minutes LESS than package instructions. If your noodles seem very sticky, rinse them in cold water. Toss noodles with about half of the sesame sauce.
  3. Bowls: Divide noodles, edamame, cucumber, and chicken into containers. Drizzle with a little extra sauce and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Voila! Store in the fridge for 3-4 days. Eat hot or cold. Take a shot for the ‘gram cause this is your moment.

Equipment

Notes

Ideal method for cooking the chicken: Cut a pound of chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces, toss with olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder, and bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Done. If you like a little browning on your chicken (like what’s pictured here), once it’s baked, just pop it in a skillet with some extra sesame sauce and let it get nice and roasty-browned on the outside!

We love this dish. You are one of my favorite foodies. We are getting ready to leave for vacation and I had some fresh tomatoes off the vine and a lemon that I wanted to use up. I added lemon juice and the zest from the lime into the pan when I stir fried the chicken. Wow. It added a zip that was delicious. And those fresh tomatoes with the edamame. Had more f a fresh garden feel to it. Loved it. Thanks so much for all of these delicious recipes.

  2. Pinch of Yum Logo

I couldn’t be more frustrated with this recipe. The sauce took me 15 mins and then I realized the chicken and edamame have separator non existent instructions. Took me an hour overall.

  3. Pinch of Yum Logo

This was delicious! I substituted the edamame with broccoli since that was what I had on hand. I also added hot pepper flakes. Yummy!

Where can I find nutrition facts on these recipes because I do li mm it my sodium intake.

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Hi, Diane! All of our nutrition facts can be found at the bottom of the recipe card on each individual recipe. For these noodle bowls, each serving has approximately 671 mg of sodium. Hope this helps!

  5. Pinch of Yum Logo

    Dumb question?

Does this freeze well? I like to batch cook for variety and freezing helps with hat.

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

We haven’t tried freezing this recipe. I’m thinking the the noodles and accompanying vegetables may not be so great texture-wise once defrosted.

  6. Pinch of Yum Logo

Can’t wait to try this tonight as well as for meal prep! As I am tracking this in MFP (my fitness pal) I noted that the calories are WAY low for the ingredients. I come out closer to 530 per serving and 43 grams of protein. Looks like the breakdown above doesn’t include the chicken, all my other macros match up pretty close.
Also love the comments about peanut butter (mmmm) and broccoli. Totally trying it that way too!

  7. Pinch of Yum Logo

A++ recipe! So easy and quick to throw together. My one tip: don’t be afraid to tinker with the sauce! Try adding chili garlic sauce (from the same brand that makes sriracha), a pinch of honey or maple syrup, maybe even fish sauce, etc.

  8. Pinch of Yum Logo

I’ve made this twice for my meal prepping for lunches (2 weeks in a row). It’s delicious! I used whole grain spaghetti (I’m on ww) and it was a perfect. Thank you!!

  9. Pinch of Yum Logo

Wow these look great! I definitely want to try them. How long can you store these in the fridge for? Would it be unwise to have one for lunch each day for 4 days 😅😅

  10. Pinch of Yum Logo

So simple and delicious! I keep coming back to this recipe. I love that it can easily be adapted depending on what veggies you have on hand. I added julienned carrots and broccoli this time and it was super tasty!

  11. Pinch of Yum Logo

Made this Sesame Noodle Bowl and it turned out ridiculously amazing, we are in love!, followed recipe exactly, thank you for a new house fav that’s guilt free! 😂👏🏻♥️

  12. Pinch of Yum Logo

My sauce came out INCREDIBLY salty. I followed the recipe though. ☹️ It would have been SO good if it was just a little less salty.

  13. Pinch of Yum Logo

Just came across this recipe and made for dinner tonight! We loved it! 🙂 seems very versatile, excited to try new combos with the sauce for lunches!

  14. Pinch of Yum Logo

I haven’t tried the recipe yet as I meal prepped it for the week. (I’m sure it will be delish!) But I wanted to leave a comment to say the calorie count is way off for this meal. I had to substitute half my noodles for zucchini noodles for it to even remotely fit in my budget. The sauce is what really pushes it over the edge…so calorie counters beware 😉

  15. Pinch of Yum Logo

Love how fast this yummy meal comes together and the cucumbers give it freshness!
Question, how long can the sauce be saved in the refrigerator for?

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

So glad you like the recipe, Jess! The sauce should keep for up to 5 days.

  16. Pinch of Yum Logo

The sauce on this is so incredibly good – I doubled the noodles on accident, and it still tasted delicious!
